Fall Sweet Spots

By Catherine Rhegness

Rachel Michaels Popcorn and Edibles is a great shop to get a scrumptious treat. Rachel’s shop has been open for 5 years now, since October 2013. Her shop carries the main flavors caramel corn, cheddar corn, kettle corn, and buckeye corn, but she also carries unique flavors such as buffalo bleu cheese, cheddar jalapeno, dill pickle, white cheddar, sea salt and balsamic, salt and vinegar, coffee, black cherry, blueberry, blue raspberry, cherry, cinnamon, lemon, orange, strawberry, watermelon, bacon, chocolate, cake, and grape. Rachel’s buckeye corn is the most popular flavor with the variety of peanut butter, chocolate, and caramel corn. The hardest flavors for her to make are the bacon and chocolate. These flavors take a lot more preparation, therefore they take longer to prepare. If you cannot make it to the store, she sells her popcorn on Amazon and her very own online shop. She renews her flavors over the seasons. In the fall she has pumpkin, caramel, and apple. For Thanksgiving, she has a flavor called Stove Pop that tastes like stuffing and for Christmas, Rachel makes Christmas corn that tastes like thin mints. My personal favorite flavor is the cake popcorn. This flavor tastes like a vanilla cake with frosting. Rachel’s shop carries a flavor for everyone, traditional or unique.

MacQueen’s Apple Orchard is one of the best stops to get a warm apple treat. This orchard has been owned and operated by Robert and Marlene MacQueen for over 55 years. On November 13, 2013, we, unfortunately, lost Robert MacQueen. Marlene is keeping the apple orchard open with the help of her four adult kids – Jeff as President, Bob II as Vice President, Marlene as treasurer, Zachary as Secretary, Lynn Gorey as the bookkeeper, and Cindy Kaiser, a retired teacher that assists with pick-your-own with her husband, Sam. You can get apple pies, cherry pies, peach pies, berry pies in season, pumpkin bread, cake pies, cream pies, apple bread, peach bread, coffee cakes, apple fritters, bread, sweet rolls, cider donuts, sugar and frosted donuts, apple dumplings, and cookies from the Donut Hole. From the sweet shop, you can get apple pie, fritters, peach pie, apple dumplings, candy sticks, jawbreakers, licorice, chocolates, sandwiches, hand-dipped ice cream, caramel apples, fresh fruit, suckers, popcorn, a cider slush, refreshing soft drinks, cold apple cider, and coffee. My favorite treat to get is their donuts. Some of their donut flavors are pumpkin cinnamon sugar, cinnamon sugar, chocolate, powdered, vanilla with sprinkles, apple dumpling, maple, vanilla, and pumpkin. My favorite donut is the cinnamon sugar with a cider slush to wash it down. MacQueen’s is a fun experience and makes a special treat for everyone.
