Invasive Species

By Elena Allred and Elanora Smith

What is an invasive species? An invasive species is an organism that causes ecological or economic harm in a new environment where it is not native.

There are many invasive species present in Ohio, and they harm the native plants and animals. A few ways you can help stop the spread of invasive species in your area include:

Clean your hiking and fishing gear

Don’t move firewood

Fish using native bait

Volunteer at removal efforts

Select native plants from your local nursery for your garden or yard

Clean your boat before moving it to a new body of water

Report invasive species if you see them

Be aware of the invasive species in your area
