With all the bad news in the world, it’s not every day that we see some good in the world. One of the main problems that we have in the world is the deforestation of trees all around the world. This problem has been shown on news, and everyone knows about it, but not many people are trying to act on it to fix it.
Forests cover over 30% of the Earth’s land surface and provide oxygen for living things to breathe. However, over the last 25 years, forests have shrunk by 502,000 square miles. If that was a country, it would be the 19th largest in the world, right in front of Peru.
This is a problem because 80% of life lives in forest and tree habitats. Not only this, but many countries use wood for many of their resources. According to an FAO report from 2018, ¾ of the Earth’s freshwater comes from forested watersheds. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, lessening greenhouse gas emissions, Tropical trees alone are estimated to provide about 23% of the climate mitigation that’s needed to offset climate change.
There have been attempts to fix this, however. On October 25, a charity was started called Team Trees which aimed to plant 20,000,000 trees by 2020. A large mass of support from famous YouTubers helped push this campaign, and they ended up meeting their goal. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more movements like this so that we can save our planet.
